Take a pilgrimage to Hawaii and participate in a sacred creation that will outlive you. An actively engaged, educational and transformational workshop, where together we bring this dream to life, in and for community.
The Temple will be a super adobe, earthen, and recycled material structure and will include natural materials sourced from the island. Build will be led by the experienced team of Phil Basehart and his ECOHAB builders.
The project will take place at Rainbow Bridge Hawaii on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island. Come participate in a tropical eco-village and its integrated Permaculture systems.
This project is seeking those open to the ancient ways and natural building to take part in sacred service constructing a modern day dream temple with experts in the field.
After completing a Bachelor of Environmental Design at Miami University in 1992, Phil moved to New Mexico to build his own self-sufficient house with minimal experience, camping for five years at the Greater World Earthship Community. This led him to become a Licensed Contractor in 1999, focusing on adaptive build designs that benefit both people and the planet. As a team leader for Earthship Biotecture, Phil has worked on over 150 sustainable homes and managed 20+ Taos County Earthship permits. In 2011, he co-founded the Earthship Academy, where he has taught various classes on building autonomous homes. He also played a key role in founding Biotecture Planet Earth Non Profit in 2003, serving as project coordinator, construction supervisor, and fundraiser for two decades. He has built in over 45 countries in almost every type of climate.
ECOHAB is a New Mexico-based 501(c)(3) that specializes in adaptive designing and building. They are focused on creating ecological, self-sustaining communities through adaptive design. They build eco-friendly structures like homes, schools, and community centers using locally available resources. Their projects, spanning across regions like Haiti, Guatemala, and Puerto Rico, emphasize self-reliance and environmental stewardship.

A lush and secluded edenic paradise on the Hamakua coast with cascading waterfalls, expansive ocean views, and temperatures that fluctuate from 66-78 Fahrenheit. The land is on 86 acres nestled between two fresh water spring-fed streams. Explore an ecovillage and community that is energy and water sovereign. Swim in waterfall pools, connect with cows, horses, and local wildlife. Sing songs by the campfire while observing the starry firmament above. Truly become one with the land by breathing the air, drinking filtered spring & rain water, and eating generously from food grown in the soil beneath your feet.
This project will incorporate a tire foundation, hyperadobe, ferro-cement vaults, volcanic stone, pumice, bottles, cans, plastics, and other locally sourced materials. The design will emphasize thermal mass cooling and will feature a small solar electric system, along with a catch-water swimming pool complete with a waterfall.
Workshop participants will assist the ECOHAB crew in constructing this temple and will receive two classes each week. These classes will cover building techniques and philosophies, along with some Asklepian therapy methods.
Camping area is provided with bathrooms and hot water showers on the farm. Participants need to provide their own camping gear, and prepare for rainy conditions. Alternative to camping, there are limited shared indoor spaces for rent during the workshop. Spaces will have 2-3 participants in each. Beds in shared spaces will be rented for $400/month.
Catering is offered with three meals a day, for an additional $200 a week for Monday – Friday. Rainbow Bridge is a vegetarian farm, plus fish, and asks participants to respect this if they choose to provide their own food. Catering will need to be signed up for in advance. Rainbow Bridge has one communal kitchen that will be designated for catering. If participants want to have food outside of the catering service, they will need to provide their own camping stove and store the food themselves.
Once registered for the workshops, participants will get registration for accommodation and catering.
The cost of the month-long workshop is $1200 or $350 for a single week.
Discounts and scholarships available for Hawaii locals. For more information email – madeleine@rainbowbridgehawaii.
The farm is 17 miles from Hilo, 20 miles to the Hilo Airport, and 2 hours drive to the Kona Airport.
There is a bus to Hilo and a bus to Kona that stop down the road twice per day each. There are smaller towns nearby, including one with a well-stocked Country Store and a Restaurant within a 10 minute drive.
The temple will be a transformational healing space for the RBH non-profit and the local community. It will be used to provide dream healing techniques to whomever stays and carry the ancient tradition into the modern world.
This workshop allows ECOHAB to explore alternative materials while enhancing their overall approach to workshops and classes. While general donations to ECOHAB are always appreciated, they will not be fundraising or accepting donations for this project beyond the workshop signups.
We look forward to welcoming you to this 3.5 week workshop in the tropics! Please click the link below to apply on ECOHAB’s website.
